School Consultation and IEP Meetings/504
Plan:
School consultation is a process for providing
psychological and educational services in which
Dr. Schneider works cooperatively with a school
to improve the learning and adjustment of the
student. Dr. Schneider helps the school through
systematic problem solving, social influence,
and professional support. In turn, the school
helps the student by selecting, implementing,
and evaluating school-based interventions.
IEP Meeting: Before an IEP is written for
a child with a disability, determination whether
the child qualifies for special education
services. To qualify, the child's disability
must have an adverse effect on the child's
educational progress. Merely having a disability
is not sufficient for eligibility.
The IEP team must include the student's parent(s)
or guardian(s), a special education teacher, at
least one regular education teacher, a school
representative, and an individual who can
interpret the instructional implications of the
child's evaluation results (such as Dr.
Schneider).
504 Plan Accommodations: This can include
physical impairments; illnesses or injuries;
communicable diseases; chronic conditions like
asthma, allergies and diabetes; and learning
problems. A 504 plan spells out the
modifications and accommodations that will be
needed for these students to have an opportunity
perform at the same level as their peers, and
might include such things as wheelchair ramps,
blood sugar monitoring, an extra set of
textbooks, a peanut-free lunch environment, home
instruction, or a tape recorder or keyboard for
taking notes.
